Connecting with Your Audience: 3. Presentation Tips

Engage

Here are some engagement tips to consider:

Be yourself
We are all different in how we interact with each other. Each of you has your own personality and you can certainly bring your uniqueness to the program delivery. For instance, one of our educators always wears a Hawaiian shirt when teaching, because he is a surfer and that is part of his personality. Make sure your dress conforms with school dress codes though!

For those of you who like to joke or clown around, it is fine to bring your joy to the activities but be aware that the focus is on the program content. Also remember, you are working with kids younger than you and the humor must always be appropriate.

If you happen to be shy, this is a great way to grow your comfort and the kids will love you being there. Just remember to speak up and be enthusiastic. Perhaps teaming up with another educator is a good way for you to get started.

Tell a story
The entire Dangerous Decibels program is designed to be told as one story. If you learn the modules, you’ll be able to tell the story smoothly. Just tie the key messages together and make it exciting for the students to learn what comes next in the story.

Get different volunteers for different things
Some students are more outgoing than others and will volunteer for everything. Be sure and involve as many students as you can and try to keep different ones involved with each activity. You may have to coax the hesitant student to participate, but if given the chance, they will enjoy being part of the program.

Enjoy your presentation and your students
This should be FUN for you as much as the students. Working with kids can be very enjoyable and the more you engage and join in the activities WITH the students, the more successful it will be for everyone. Each audience will be different and brings their own personalities to the event, this makes each teaching experience different and enjoyable in its own regard.
