Connecting with Your Audience: 2. Practical Matters

Teacher/Host Engagement

It is advantageous to discuss the desired level of engagement for the classroom teacher and/or leaders or hosts of the Dangerous Decibels Program. Students certainly benefit by either seeing their classroom teacher delivering the program or engaged in the activities. For instance the teacher can help the students read their sound level meters during the Walk Away activity if there is a guest educator delivering the program.

This is also the time to have a discussion with the teacher/host regarding:

  • Classroom or organization routines
  • Student participation etiquette
  • Classroom management norms

There have been occasions when the teacher/host leaves the classroom during the 50-minute presentation. Although, you can request that the teacher or host stay and participate, some hosts envision the guest presentation of Dangerous Decibels as a chance to take a coffee break or catch up on grading or emails. This is when it becomes critical that the Dangerous Decibels educator demonstrate their classroom management skills and successfully lead the students through the program independently. You should just carry-on as if the teacher or host were present. They will most likely return at the given time.
