Dangerous Decibels Program Walk-Through: 4. How Do We Damage Our Hearing?

Storytelling Tips

Tips for telling the story of the imaginary day: Connect the story to visual state of the pipe cleaners.

Morning conversation: demonstrates that some sounds are safe.

Lawnmower: demonstrates that at higher levels of sound our hair bundles begin to be damaged and we begin to lose our hearing.

Key iconSound that is too loud can damage the hair cells of our inner ear.
Fireworks Show: Build excitement about going to the fireworks show
Key iconHearing an extremely loud sound even one time can also cause you to lose some of your hearing. Once your hearing is damaged, there is nothing that will make you hear as well as you do now.
Remember to show the DAMAGED Hair Bundle image at the end of the fireworks activity and reinforce that damaged hair cells can no longer stand up straight, they cannot respond to sound vibrations and we begin to lose our hearing.
Key iconDamage to the hair cell is permanent and cannot be repaired.
